What is dental plaque

Plaque is a sticky film of microorganisms that forms on teeth after eating or drinking anything. The bacteria in the mouth reacts by creating an acidic layer over the teeth. These acids can destroy enamel and can also cause cavities.

Plaque can also develop underneath the gums on tooth roots and break down the bones that support teeth. Untreated plaque will harden into tough-to-remove tartar.

Consuming large amounts of sweet or starchy foods and drinks, smoking, or having a dry mouth can increase your chances of getting plaque.

The microorganisms in the mouth combine with sweet or starchy foods like milk, juice, soft drinks, bread, pasta, and fruit, and release acids that break down carbohydrates in food and drinks.

 Symptoms generally include:

  1. Chronic unhealthy breath.
  2. Facial swelling, tender gums
  3. Redness around or within the mouth.
  4. Swollen or other signs of gum illness.
  5. Toothache or mouth pain, or bleeding gums.
  6. Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods or drinks

Infrequent brushing and flossing will cause plaque to harden into tartar. This can further lead to gingivitis. Severe gum infection, tooth decay, tooth loss, and infection too

Our dental practitioner will use instruments throughout regular dental check-ups to see and remove plaque. Plaque can also cause cavities.

Seeing our dental practitioner and getting dental check-ups twice a year can greatly reduce the ill effects. During a dental examination, our doctors will scrape plaque and tartar from your teeth.

  1. Good oral hygiene, together with regular brushing and flossing, removes plaque and prevents tartar build-up.
  2. Dental sealants can also be recommended to keep plaque from forming on the surfaces of teeth.
  3. Dry mouth medications to extend saliva production
  4. Fluoride treatments are also used to slow the expansion of plaque-causing microorganisms and stop cavities.
